Big Fat Watermelon

17 07 2013

One doesn’t usually equate wool with summer projects.  But in my “Wool” Projects class we use it year round.  The project for this month was the Big Fat Watermelon pincushion from Bird Brain Designs.  I used wool felt rather than 100% felted wool.

The ant is supposed to be filled with emery, but since I didn’t have any on hand he is just filled with sand.  I think he looks dejected, and he is also a little unstable on his feet.  The ladybug is a pin/needle keep and was super fast to make.  It would be a great little gift for sewing friends.

The pincushion is filled with crushed walnut shells and if you weren’t already aware, these are available in pet supply stores.  Apparently the crushed walnut shells are used for reptile litter.  No reptiles in my future, but several more pincushions!

Hello Sonya,

Just love it. These look too lovely to put pins in. I would have them on display. The ant is fantastic, I can just imagine the whole nest getting the message that the watermelon is tasty.

Have a lovely day.
