I’m Late, I’m Late for a very important…

30 04 2009

Oh, wait a minute, it isn’t that important.  I’m just behind on the A Tiskit A Tasket block of the month from Bunny Hill Designs.  Here it is the last day of April and I just finished the March block.    Oh well, better late than never.

I continue to use only fabric and notions I already have.  That was difficult on this block, but I finally found some buttons that would work.

Field Trip

28 04 2009

The full time teachers at school are out of state for training.  We took one of our remaining snow days yesterday, but today we had an all school field trip.  A lot of it was my idea so I ended up organizing most of it.    I knew we wanted to go to one of the biggest libraries in town and to the Olympic training Center.  However, that left us a couple of hours in the morning before either opened.  The solution a scavenger hunt at a grocery store.  The store closest to the school is a Super Wal Mart so that was our destination.  I searched the net and came up with some ideas, but came up with even more leafing through the math books.  Some of the things I came up with were:

  • Add all the percentages for state and local sales tax calculate the price of a video game
  • Compare sugar content between two cereals
  • Compare the difference in price on differing sized packaging for the same product
  • Compare prices for generic vs. brand name
  • Find examples of solid geometric shapes
  • Use scales and calculate the price after weighing bananas
  • Find the originating countries for produce
  • Find all the colors of the rainbow in the produce section
  • Compare expiration dates on dairy to find the freshest
  • Evaluate the fat and sodium content in snack foods
  • Find all the types of sugar in drinks and compare the amounts
  • Find the diameter, radius and circumference of a frozen pizza and determine the fraction for one serving

There was more, but that is a sampling.  I don’t think anyone completely finished in the allotted time, but we did cover math, science and social studies.  In that exercise.  If this is of interest to anyone, I’m putting the worksheets I created in the download box on the right side of my Blog.

Next we went to the library were they divided the students into to groups K-5 and 6-9.  The library staff gave the kids a great overview of the services offered.  I stayed with the older kids and we started off with time in a computer lab where they were shown all the online resources offered by the library.  I thought I was a pretty intense library user, but I learned loads.  This library has a room especially for the teens.  Anyone below 6th grade or over 18 must check in at the desk to enter.  They had video games they could check out and use in there, same with laptops, resources especially for the teens.  My kids fell in love.  This isn’t the branch closest to home, but I have a feeling I’ll be stop by there more often.  At the library we covered language arts for the day.

Next we went to Fargo’s Pizza for lunch.  I had made reservations and pre-ordered.  They told me if I called while we were 5 minutes out they would put the pizza in when I called.  They were amazingly efficient and there was pizza left after everyone ate.  My only mistake was allowing the kids to go to the game room when they finished eating.  It took me longer than I expected to get them out of there and we ended up a few minutes behind schedule.

Since we were about 5 minutes late to the Olympic training center we missed the video at the start of the tour,  but were able to watch it after the tour.  The complex is pretty amazing and I would love to have just two lanes of their pool in my backyard — unfortunately, I don’t think it would fit.  The wrestling room was way too warm, but I learned they do that so the wrestlers muscles stay loose.  This stop in our trip covered PE.

The only thing we didn’t cover on the road was Bible class.  I hope the kids were a walking example of what they believe.

All in all it was a good day.  I think it might be time for a nap!

Mine, Mine, Mine, Mine, MINE!

Yes, I finished one of MY quilts.  If you have followed my ramblings for awhile, you know it is a rare occurrence for me to finish one of my larger quilts.  This quilt has been a long time in the process.  I appliqued most of the blocks in 2005, some may have been finished in 2006.  This quilt is from the book Horn of Plenty for a New Century.  There isn’t much original in my version.  I loved the quilt the way it was, so it is even quilted the same.  This is the 3rd large quilt I have appliqued, but the first I’ve actually managed to finish.

This is also the quilt I was whining about on March 30 when the fabric ran while washing out the marks.  There are still a few faint spots that even a bleach pen wouldn’t take out.

The quilt is quilted with So Fine Thread and has Hobbs Wool batting (my favorite for my quilts).  Without further ado here is the latest quilt to come off the UFO list.

I’m including pictures of a few of the blocks.  There are 18 total, but I won’t bore you with all of them.

Crosshatching is probably one of my least favorite things to do on a longarm.  I marked this whole quilt and I still couldn’t get it perfect.

I even managed to get a label on it.  I’m calling it Fruit Basket Upset because  things just didn’t go right at the end.  The embroidery design is from the Bernina Collection “The Good Live by Debbie Mumm.”

Whimsical or…?

21 04 2009

I’ve had my nose to the grind stone doing a rush quilting job.  Susan made this quilt from the pattern Simple Gifts by Mary Sorenson.  Susan’s request was that I do something whimsical.  I used designs from Irena Bluhm’s book Blooming Background Designs

I was trying to decide whether the quilting was actually “whimsical” or just over the top.  Ultimately it didn’t make any difference because I wasn’t tearing the stitching out.

I finished the quilt last night at about 8:30pm and delivered it this morning on my way to school.  Apparently the quilting was exactly what Susan envisioned as whimsical, so all is well.  Here are a couple pictures.

I used Isacord thread on the top (it quilted up beautifully and I used almost the whole 1000 m cone) and So Fine in the bobbin.

My sister called a few minutes ago.  Since I assume most people reading what I write are crafters of some sort, I thought her story would amuse you.

The summer of 1986 Sheila worked teaching ceramics at Sunset Lake Camp.  If you’ve ever taught craft type classes, you know teachers need samples.  She made several different things, one of which was a mug which resembled blue jeans.  On the waistband tab she painted her name.  Of course the bottom of the mug also had her initials and the year.sheila-mug1

Years passed and as anyone who creates knows, we can’t keep everything we make.  Last fall she and her husband were going through boxes as they cleaned out their basement.  Among two loads hauled off to Goodwill was that mug.

Yesterday, Sheila and David stopped by my aunt’s house to drop of some things.  My sister’s birthday is this week.  My aunt brought out a bag and told her it was for her birthday.  Sheila said she didn’t need anything, but my aunt said it contained some UFOs she had been finishing.  When they got home Sheila placed the bag on the counter and began removing items.  There were embroidered towels, AND,you guessed it, among the towels was the mug Sheila made in 1986!

Apparently, there are just some things that are impossible to get rid of!
